I can’t recall how young I was when I got my first turntable, but until I was in high school all my albums were gifts from my folks. The ones that stand out in my memory are Herb Alpert and the Tijuana brass, Hank Williams 24 greatest hits, Butch Cassidy soundtrack (raindrops keep falling on my head).

My town had a really sweet used record/head shop, where I spent many an after school hour and all of my savings account. I think the first album that I bought myself was Abbey Road. I had heard it at a party and knew I had to listen to it some more.

I brought three melon crates of lps to college, and all of them returned home with me except my dead albums. Every one of those had been stolen during an all dorm party!
